Episode 9: Plastic Free July

Tuesday Jul 23, 2024

Tuesday Jul 23, 2024

Did you know that this was a thing? Well 50% of these Emily's did!
Plastic Free July is a key initiative of the Plastic Free Foundation that allows us to work towards our vision of seeing a world free of plastic waste. From humble beginnings in 2011, the award-winning Plastic Free July campaign is the result of years of hard work.
It was started by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (the founder of the Plastic Free Foundation) and a small team in local government in Western Australia, and is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world. Millions of people across the globe take part every year, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution far beyond the month of July.

What is "fast fashion"?If you ask SNL it's this: https://www.tiktok.com/@nbcsnl/video/7370753651671026990?lang=en
Fast fashion can be defined as low-cost, trendy clothing rapidly produced by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends. Fast fashion focuses on affordability and convenience – largely at the cost of people and the planet. Fast fashion plays into the idea that outfit repeating is a fashion faux pas. To stay relevant, you should be sporting the latest looks while they’re happening.
Well, thanks to the amazing Carissa (Emily S's cousin to boot!) we dig into all the things that fast fashion is and isn't. Carissa is the brains, beauty and brain behind Copious Fashions (https://www.copiousfashions.com/) and we talk about circular fashion and why she has "buy local. buy secondhand. buy less” on her website.

Episode 7: Microplastics

Wednesday May 29, 2024

Wednesday May 29, 2024

Microplastics, tiny plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, have become pervasive in our environment, notably in our waterways. These particles can release toxic chemicals into water bodies and the animals that inhabit them. Alarmingly, research has discovered microplastics in human organs, including testicles, lungs, hearts, and even breast milk. The presence of these particles in such critical areas of the body raises significant health concerns.
Potential health risks associated with microplastics include a reduction in sperm count, which may be linked to the presence of plastic particles in reproductive organs. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to certain types of microplastics, such as vinyl chloride, a known carcinogen, can increase the risk of cancer. This underscores the urgent need for further research and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of microplastics on human health and the environment.
